Kanye West, a longtime fan of design heavy hitters like Belgian decorator Axel Vervoordt, is now a serious style icon himself—he hosted a major fashion show (and listening party for the rapper’s new album, The Life of Pablo) at Madison Square Garden this year for the launch of his third collection with Adidas. And closer to home, West recently revealed his favorite furnishing in his new 9,000-square-foot Bel Air, California, residence: Jean Royère’s iconic Polar Bear sofa. With curved edges and soft faux-fur upholstery, the piece fits well with the minimalist white decor, which West previewed via social media. (He also noted that he is searching for the perfect bed—we’d like to submit our suggestions.)
In an ode to West’s favorite French designer, who is known for combining bright colors, luxurious organic shapes, and plush fabrics, we rounded up examples of Royère’s furnishings from the AD archives.

In the living room at his Hamptons retreat, architect Lee F. Mindel positioned a Jean Royère–designed sofa and chairs from 1947 beside the limestone fireplace. Behind the sofa is a 1930 floor lamp by Édouard-Wilfred Buquet, and on the 1955 Perriand wood low table are two green Georges Jouve vases and an ebony sculpture by Alexandre Noll.

At a Connecticut residence, decorator India Mahdavi grouped two pairs of sofas, twin screens, and cocktail tables in the living room—all of her own design—with vintage André Arbus lounge chairs and Jean Royère armchairs; the red metal floor lamp is also by Royère, the sculptural floor lamp at far left is by Andrea Branzi, and the rug is by Fedora Design.
